I am delighted to have teamed up again with Katya Andrews (Yoga Tree Studio)to offer you a transformative yoga holiday in the beautiful Finca del Alamo in Almeria. The venue is in a peaceful, isolated location, but within walking distance of the pretty traditional local village of Nijar, which can be seen across the valley at the foot of the spectacular mountain backdrop. It is only half an hour from Almeria airport.
Almeria is Spain’s sunniest region and one of the least visited. Its proximity to North Africa means that the area is semi-desert, dry and dramatic, with imposing mountains and dazzling sea. The venue is on the edge of one of Europe’s most remote and beautiful natural parks, the Cabo de Gata, one of the last unspoiled stretches of Spanish coastline. It’s an amazing landscape of perfect half-moon bays, hidden coves, bizarre volcanic rock formations, and spectacular flora and fauna – a wonderful wild coastline, which you will have seen more times than you think as the backdrop in many films including Indiana Jones, Lawrence of Arabia, and Sergio Leone’s famous spaghetti westerns!
The venue consists of the main house the ‘Finca’, which won awards in the 80’s for its striking modernist design, and a group of converted traditional buildings, the cortijos, just a couple of hundred yards from the main house. It sits in the semi-desert landscape amid lush gardens, its architecture echoing ancient Mediterranean civilizations. It has long been a stylish, bohemian family home, also an exotic venue for photo shoots. It is now adapted to cater for yoga groups.
There are two pools, one at the house and one in the cortijo area. One is an ‘eco-pool’ the water is continually filtered through reed and water-plant beds, and is crystal clear. The pool at the cortijos is emptied and refilled once a week to irrigate the lush grounds. Both pools are minimally treated to ensure cleanliness without harming the delicate eco-system. It makes for a lovely swimming experience.
The main house has two double en-suite bedrooms and four twin en- suites.
The cortijos have been converted in the original local style into charming accommodation, located a couple of hundred yards from the main house. The cortijo apartments have their own sitting rooms/kitchens (meals are served at the main house) with 7 twin en-suite rooms. All accommodation has air-conditioning.

Meals are vegetarian/vegan by default, served buffet style with fresh local produce, and include breakfast, lunch and dinner. The meals are healthy and varied, with plenty of choice. If requested we can provide one or two meals during the week with fish or chicken. We can cater for gluten and dairy free diets and for medical allergies. However, we regret we can’t cater for personal preferences or complicated special diets. One night a week dinner is eaten out, usually on excursion day.
The venue is a yoga retreat – informal and relaxed, so it doesn’t offer ‘hotel service’. They don’t go into your rooms to tidy, change bed linen, towels or clean during the week. However, if you need a towel or sheet replacement or any other service, ask they will be very happy to help.
The pool beds have protective toweling covers, freshly laundered each week before your arrival. In addition there are a selection of beach towels for use at the pool or beach. Towels for the bathrooms are povided, but please don’t use these for the pool or beach.
Rooms are provided with hair driers.
Hand soap is provided, but as most guests have their special preferences for shampoo, shower gel, lotions and potions, are not provided.
There is wifi available in the finca and cortijos.
There are several scenic walks straight from the Finca, of varying lengths, including up to the mountain village of Huebro via the Ruta del Agua, around two hours each way, following the spring-fed stream past more than twenty small water mills, to the pool at the source of the water, where you can have a refreshing swim! So bring some trainers or walking shoes. There are also a couple of shorter walks near the Finca, one which includes a visit to an extinct volcano.
There are several options for things to do in the area. Transport usually costs around €25 per head for a half-day excursion (depending on numbers) which typically includes the beach, shopping and dinner out.
Several sandy, secluded and unspoiled beaches can be found within approximately 20 – 30 minutes drive from the venue, inside one of Spain’s largest National Parks, the Cabo de Gata. The beaches are usually warm enough to be enjoyed from May through to the end of October. There are also several charming coastal villages within the park, which make an idyllic location for a meal out at one of the many restaurants.
The Arizona style landscape of Almeria has been extensively used for filming over the years. A nearby western style town was the set for Sergio Leone’s famous ‘Spaghetti Westerns’ and is open to visitors, which includes staged ‘gun fights’ and Can-can girls in the saloon! (Actually a lot of fun!)
The pretty, local village of Nijar is within walking distance (approx 20 mins)and offers a variety of craft shops offering local ceramics, baskets and rugs, among other things. Tourism is very low key and mainly domestic, so you won’t find English speakers, so brush up your Spanish! There is also a picturesque tapas bar on the square by the church to sit and have a drink al fresco.
Excursions to Granada to visit the Alhambra (1.5 hours away) can also be arranged. Transport can be provided from between €30 – €100 pp depending on numbers. You will need to make your own ticket bookings on the official site well in advance https://www.alhambradegranada.org/en/
Check in time:
If possible the venue prefers afternoon arrivals after 2:00 pm, as this gives them chance to clean and prepare the communal spaces and your rooms following the departure of the previous group. However if this is not possible, you are welcome to arrive earlier and relax by the pool while waiting for the housekeeping jobs to be completed. However, they don’t serve lunch on changeover day, so you may wish to bring a snack with you. Water, tea, coffee and other beverages are available.
For logistical reasons, with larger groups arriving before lunchtime, we request the transfer bus to wait with you in nearby Nijar at no extra cost to your transfer (keeping your luggage on board) where you can buy lunch in the picturesque Bar Glorieta on the square by the church, before bringing you on to the retreat in the early afternoon when we are ready to receive you.
We will list preferred flights when they become available.
“Katya and Carly are the natural dream team you always wish for as yoga teachers on a retreat! Their well grounded, meaningful yet light-hearted approach to teaching and their deep knowledge and love of the practice is infectious. With complementing styles of both yin and yang asanas and their skillful attention given to every class left us stronger, more flexible and definitely more relaxed in every way by the end of the week. Simply put…Katya and Carly make you feel wonderful!

“What a fabulous week I had on the Yoga holiday on the beautiful island of Ithaca. Every element was perfect to me – the location, the food, the organisation but especially the Yoga. At 4 hours of yoga a day I thought it might be a bit much but Carly and Katya’s classes were a delight. They were beautifully put together and balanced. My love for Yoga only increased and their passion was certainly passed on. Both teachers are brilliant at what they do and they are able to convey the essence of the Yoga discipline in a wonderfully supportive way – no talking down or making anyone feel inadequate. I have practiced Yoga for many years (my first teacher being my Dad when I was very small!) and I can honestly say that I have never come across such positive, high quality and caring teaching. Keep it up girls!”
